Some artists spend years chasing success in music. Danielle Ponder spent years building an entirely different career before finally allowing herself to pursue the one she had always dreamed of.
Born and raised in Rochester, New York, the American singer-songwriter has become one of the most compelling voices in contemporary soul, not only because of her extraordinary vocal ability, but because of the remarkable journey that brought her there. Before performing on festival stages around the world, Ponder spent nearly a decade working as a public defender, advocating for people whose voices often went unheard. Today, she channels that same empathy, conviction and emotional honesty into music that blends soul, R&B, blues, rock and trip-hop.
Danielle Ponder grew up in a deeply musical household. The sixth of seven children, she was surrounded by gospel from an early age thanks to her father, a pastor who played piano and sang. Although she never imagined music as a realistic career, singing quickly became a constant in her life.
As she grew older, her influences expanded far beyond gospel. Artists such as Lauryn Hill, Pearl Jam, Alanis Morissette, The Roots, Big Mama Thornton and Koko Taylor shaped her eclectic musical taste, helping form a sound that would later become impossible to categorize. Rather than fitting neatly into one genre, Ponder naturally combined soul, blues, hip-hop, alternative rock and R&B into something entirely her own.
Despite her passion for singing, Danielle initially chose a different path.
After her brother received a 20-year prison sentence under New York's "three strikes" law, she decided to study law, hoping to fight for people facing similar injustices. She graduated from law school before joining the Monroe County Public Defender's Office, where she spent years representing clients who could not afford legal counsel. Later, she also became the office's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer.
Music, however, never disappeared.
She continued writing songs, performing with local bands and touring whenever she could. It wasn't unusual for her to return from a European tour only to be back in court the following Monday morning. For years, she successfully balanced two completely different lives, lawyer by day, musician whenever she had the opportunity.
Eventually, balancing both careers became impossible.
In 2018, Ponder made the difficult decision to leave the legal profession and dedicate herself entirely to music. It was a leap of faith years in the making, driven by the realization that although she loved being a public defender, she loved being on stage even more.
She spent the following years writing and producing the songs that would become her debut album. Initially unsure of her artistic identity, she gradually stopped trying to fit expectations and instead embraced the voice and sound that felt most authentic to her. That creative honesty would become the defining characteristic of her work.
Released in 2022, Some of Us Are Brave immediately established Danielle Ponder as one of soul music's most exciting new voices.
Written over three years, the album explores love, healing, vulnerability and resilience through a cinematic blend of soul, blues, R&B, alternative rock and trip-hop. Rather than making overtly political music despite her legal background, Ponder chose to write about emotional survival, believing that personal stories can be just as powerful as social commentary.
The album's title carries particular significance. It references the groundbreaking book All the Women Are White, All the Blacks Are Men, But Some of Us Are Brave, paying tribute to Black women and the courage that shaped both her personal journey and artistic identity.
Danielle Ponder's decision quickly proved worthwhile.
Within a short period, she signed with Future Classic, performed on major American television shows, appeared at festivals including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Montreux Jazz Festival, and shared stages with artists such as Marcus Mumford and Leon Bridges. Her songs have also been featured in numerous film, television and advertising projects, introducing her music to audiences around the world.
Whether standing beside clients in a courtroom or thousands of listeners in a concert hall, Danielle Ponder has always done the same thing.
She reminds people that bravery often begins with choosing the life you're truly meant to live.
